The Program

The Health Care Management Graduate Certificate prepares graduates to take on management or leadership roles within the complex and rapidly changing health care sector. Complementing the learner’s prior education as a practitioner, the program draws upon relevant management and organizational knowledge to support those who manage and lead, or aspire to do so, within health organizations. Throughout the program, foundational business concepts are applied to the challenges faced by both public and private health care organizations. Graduates of the program will possess the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to help their organizations achieve their business and strategic goals. They will also understand the importance of a collaborative, patient-centred, and culturally sensitive working environment. Please note that the program length is 16 months.

Program Outcomes:

  • Address the needs of a variety of cultures and behaviours and respond to a diverse number of situations and environments using best patient practices to ensure positive health care operations and outcomes.
  • Employ professional leadership principles/concepts as a member of a collaborative practice health care team to achieve enhanced patient experiences/outcomes.
  • Employ strategies that promote/sustain population health, wellness, and quality of life.
  • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders and cultivate a culture of effective communications in the collaborative practice health care team.
  • Practice within the legal, ethical, and professional scope of practice in the province of Alberta as a member of a collaborative practice health care team.
  • Examine the impact of health care technology and informatics on best patient practices and the maintenance and protection of health-related documentation.
  • Assess financial analytics and data in order to inform decision-making and maximize outcomes.
  • Adopt Indigenous cultural safety practices in order to prevent and address the harm caused by discrimination and prejudice.
  • Demonstrate balance between professional and personal life.
  • Practice strategic decision-making and planning in order to achieve the organization’s business goals.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: 

Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree, or equivalent, in a health-related field.

Experience as a health care practitioner or professional is highly recommended.

Note: Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency.

Graduation Requirements: 

Completion of all courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Year 1 Course Descriptions

HCM 505

Examine the economic, political, social, legal, ethical, and historical underpinnings of the Canadian health care system. Key issues behind current policy debates in Canada and Alberta. Evolution of how health care services are funded, organzied, and delivered. Prerequisite: HCM 561 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 510

Laws that govern health care in Alberta and how these laws continuously shape and influence governance, professional practice, and policies. Identify, navigate, and facilitate the resolution of legal issues and risks unique to health care organizations. Identify links between risk, quality, and safety. Apply risk prevention and due diligence. Prerequisite: HCM 505 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 515

Examine selected ethical questions in the health care sector. Establish ethical standards and an ethical decision framework in health care organizations. Model and foster decision-making based on what is best for patients, families, staff, and the community. Reflection, critical analysis, and deliberate and ethical decision-making from different stakeholder perpectives. Prerequisite: HCM 510 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 520

Examine current strategies, theories, and practices in health care communications. Develop approaches to effectively communicate within public and private sector and across health care disciplines. Identify communication strategies for a variety of audiences including patient, patient family, individual, and group team members, funders, external partners, and media. Prerequisite: HCM 515 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 525

Examine frameworks and practices of effective leadership in health care. Discover how to inspire and engage others, and build productive teams, coalitions, and partnerships. Achieve organizational and health care system goals through project chartering, strategic planning, and consistent performance monitoring. Prerequisite: HCM 520 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 530

Examination of evidence-based decision-making. Searching literature and critically reviewing research methods, outcomes, and recommendations. Techniques used to collect, analyze, and report both quantitative and qualitative health care data. Use of data analytics for decision-making in context of patient-centered care. Prerequisite: HCM 525 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 535

Develop basic accounting practices, use financial tools and practices required for decision-making. Within the context of a health care organization, interpret and communicate financial information using operating statements, productivity data, and variance reports. Practice performance evaluation, industry standards, funding mechanisms, and impact on cost effectiveness, quality, volume, and access. Prerequisite: HCM 530 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 540

Develop technical skills in computer applications and information management relevant to health care. Security and privacy standards of information systems containing electronic health records. Overview of new and emerging trends in technology in health care management. Prerequisite: HCM 535 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 545

Develop decision-making skills to lead change through fostering a culture of creative problem solving, rapid cycle improvement, and critical thinking based on quantitative and qualitative data. Apply concepts to lead improvements addressing current health care quality concerns and risks. Evaluation of organizational culture readiness for change. Prerequisite: HCM 540 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 550

The impact of cultural diversity in health care management. The interrelationship of the body, mind, and spirit and methods to maintain, protect, and/or restore health. Examine the cultural phenomena that vary among cultural groups and how they affect health and health care. Prerequisite: HCM 545 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 555

Examine health care trends impacting the management of human resources in health care organizations. Effectively respond both as managers and leaders to the most common human resources challenge. Knowledge and competencies to effectively manage people, create a positive organizational culture, and lead within a unionized/non-unionized work environment. Prerequisite: HCM 550 or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 560

Engage in research to prepare an in-depth analysis/synthesis of a current problem facing health care leaders. Conduct literature review and consult with leaders at various organizational levels. Prepare briefing notes, project charter, and plan. Effectively engage staff and stakeholders in addressing issues while maintaining a patient/customer focus. Prerequisite: Successful completion of all courses, excluding HCM 561, 562, and 563, or consent of the Associate Dean Donald School of Business.

HCM 561

Examine the nature and scope of Canadian health care management in the context of rapid change. In a face-to-face setting, build a professional network with fellow students, faculty, and industry representatives. Improve and expand professional communication strategies.

HCM 562

Integrate knowledge, skills, and behaviour/attitudes from various health care management areas in a face-to-face setting. Build a professional network with fellow students, faculty, and industry representatives. Practice leadership and management skills in a health care context. Prerequisite: HCM 530 and HCM 561, or consent of the Associate Dean, Donald School of Business.

HCM 563

Integrate knowledge, skills, and behaviour/attitudes from various health care management areas in a face-to-face setting. Build a professional network with fellow students, faculty and industry representatives. Practice leadership and management skills in a health care context. HCM 564
