The Program

The Adult and Higher Education Instructor, Post Diploma is designed to prepare individuals for success as an instructor in an adult or post-secondary learning environment. Grounded in a Canadian teaching context, this certificate is also suitable for anyone responsible for teaching adults in workplace settings, including business, health care, government, and occupational health and safety. Through the courses and Capstone Project in this advanced certificate, students will develop their skills and knowledge-base to create successful and engaging learning environments for a wide range of adult learners. Intended for those entering into or wishing to expand their abilities in the fields of higher education and adult education, this fully online program prepares graduates for success in a variety of teaching and learning settings.

Program Outcomes:
Graduates will demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:

  • Reflect on individual professional growth through the connection of pedagogical practice to content expertise on an ongoing basis in order to meet the needs of adult learners.
  • Create and maintain classroom environments conducive to learning that promote respect for the diversity of learners.
  • Practice effective collaboration and communication skills in the learning environment.
  • Practice ethical and professional conduct.
  • Examine and critically assess trends and research in the scholarship of teaching and learning for effective implementation.
  • Integrate technology into teaching practice in order to best serve the needs of diverse learners.
  • Identify individual challenges and opportunities related to teaching and learning and implement constructive solutions that incorporate appropriate pedagogy.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: 

An undergraduate degree in any discipline from an accredited institution
OR
A two year diploma or equivalent training from an accredited institution in any discipline;
OR
Provincial Trades Certificate or Red Seal Journeyperson’s Certificate
OR
A one year certificate in any discipline from an accredited institution upon consultation and the approval of the Associate Dean

Note: Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency.
 

Graduation Requirements: 

Completion of all courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
