International Admissions

International applicants to Red Deer College should begin applying at least four (4) to six (6) months in advance of the term in which you wish to commence studies. As International applications take time to process, applications will be accepted no later than 90 days in advance of the term in which you wish to commence studies.

A valid Study Permit must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar on or before the first day of classes.

Red Deer College is recognized as a Designated Learning Institution by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Students admitted to RDC will need to provide our Designated Learning Institution Number to CIC when applying for their Study Visa. That number is: O19391056880. This number will also be noted on admission letters sent to international students.

Application Procedures

1. Complete and submit an Online Application form and pay the application fee due at the time of application.

2. Determine if your International transcripts can be assessed by RDC (Countries RDC will assess documents for Admission) or if you need to submit your transcripts to International Qualifications Assessment Services (IQAS). IQAS charges a fee for the assessment which takes an average of 4-6 months to process once they have received a complete application.

  • Request that IQAS send a copy of the assessment directly to RDC at the address below.
  • If you have one transcript on the RDC list and one not from a country on the list, you must send all transcripts to IQAS for assessment.

3. Submit official transcripts that can be assessed by RDC by the document deadlines in the chart above.

  • This applies to both students currently living in Canada and those not yet in Canada.
  • If your transcript is in a language other than English, it will need to be translated prior to submission.
  • Official transcripts must be final and sent directly to the Office of the Registrar from the issuing institution.
  • Faxed or copies submitted in person can be used for conditional admission, but official transcripts are required to receive clear admission and attend classes.

4. Meet English Language Proficiency Requirement (ELP).

  • Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English Language Proficiency for admission to credit programs by presenting evidence of one of the following:
    • successful completion of three years of full-time education in English:
      • secondary and post-secondary education completed within Canada including the grade 12 year
      • education in another country (see chart) where English is recognized as an official language of instruction
      • education at a recognized school or institution which uses English as the primary language of instruction
    • successful completion of the equivalent of three years of full-time instruction in a school or institution in Canada where primary or official language of instruction was not English, but where the level of English proficiency required for graduation is equivalent to that in English language secondary schools or post-secondary institutions in Canada
    • completion of English Language Arts 30-1 or equivalent with a minimum grade of 60%
    • successful completion of :
      • TOEFL minimum score of 550 paper based, or 213 computer based, or 80 (*91) internet based
        OR
      • IELTS minimum score of 6.5 (*6.5) overall, with at least 5.5 (*6.0) on each band score. You must take the Academic level of the IELTS test for admission purposes. See Calgary's only Official Test Centre for more information.
        OR
      • CAEL minimum score of 60 overall, with at least 60 on each band score
        OR
      • MELAB minimum score of 77 (*81) overall, with at least 72 (*78) on each band score

*Applicants to the Pharmacy Technician Program who did not graduate from a high school, university, community college, or private vocational college in Canada or the United States will be required to meet higher English language proficiency scores for TOEFL, IELTS and MELAB tests as noted above.

  • Applicants applying to the Career and Academic Preparation are not required to demonstrate English language proficiency at the levels noted for credit programs. Placement assessments are used for admission to these programs. Equivalent English Language Arts 30-1 courses are available through the Career and Academic Preparation program.
  • Applicants must also meet all other program admission requirements including the English course and minimum grade required for the program.
  • Enrolment in English as a Second Language (ESL) course or programs will not be included in the calculation of three years of full time study. Enrolment must be in a regular high school or post-secondary credit program.

Notes

  • Applications will remain pending until ALL required documentation is received.
  • Applications are not carried over from one year to the next. You must submit a new application form along with all other necessary documentation each time you apply for admission to RDC.

Fees

  • International students pay 3 times the fees for instruction plus all other fees associated with their stay at RDC. See the 2014-2015 International Program Cost Estimates.
  • Note: these fees are approximate costs only. Your actual fees will be based on your schedule and will vary from student to student.

Admitted International Students

  • Admitted applicants are responsible for all of their visa, study permit, travel and financial arrangements.
  • A valid Study Permit must be presented on or before the first day of classes.
