In this course we will explore men's and women's roles as productive and reproductive labourers, historically and contemporarily. The goal is to understand the complex processes involved in the creation, reinforcement and challenge of gendered realities in and outside the workplace. We will examine a wide array of empirical material and theoretical debates with a focus principally upon Canadian society regarding: gendered performances; domestic labour; emotional labour; the relationships between gender, organizations and bureaucracy; gender based segregation & stratification; work-family balance; non-traditional occupations; globalization; violence & risk in the workplace. Prerequisite: SOCI 260 or consent of the department.
