This course is a survey of the writings of semiotician Roland Barthes. This course will examine Barthes as a critic of cultural and linguistic signs and as a challenger of the notion of text and meaning. Texts may include S/Z, Mythologies, Image Music Text, The Pleasure of the Text, and A Lover's Discourse. Prerequisite: Full year of 200-level English.
