ENGL 371.6

This course will examine experimental and unusual Canadian texts, covering a wide variety of styles. From printed texts, to sound poetry, to visual poetry, to concrete poetry, to found texts, to online texts, to just about anything, the primary critical engagement of this class will be to interrogate and challenge the dominant modes of expressive, personal, or lyric narratives. Beginning with a survey of international Modernism of the 20th century, the course will look at mostly Canadian texts from the 1960s to the present. Where possible, the course will integrate author readings, visiting authors, performances, field trips, and other instances of textual production or dissemination relevant to the topic of study. Prerequisite: 6 credits of 200 level English.
