This course is a survey of the writings of semiotician Roland Barthes. This course will examine Barthes as a critic of cultural and linguistic signs and as a challenger of the notion of text and meaning. Texts may include S/Z; Mythologies; Image Music Text; The Pleasure of the Text; and A Lover's Discourse. Prerequisite: Full year of 200-level English.
