In this course we will explore men's and women's roles as productive and reproductive labourers; historically and contemporarily. The goal is to understand the complex processes involved in the creation; reinforcement and challenge of gendered realities in and outside the workplace. We will examine a wide array of empirical material and theoretical debates with a focus principally upon Canadian society regarding: gendered performances; domestic labour; emotional labour; the relationships between gender; organizations and bureaucracy; gender based segregation & stratification; work-family balance; non-traditional occupations; globalization; violence & risk in the workplace. Prerequisite: SOCI 260 or consent of the department.
