This course will examine experimental and unusual Canadian texts; covering a wide variety of styles. From printed texts; to sound poetry; to visual poetry; to concrete poetry; to found texts; to online texts; to just about anything; the primary critical engagement of this class will be to interrogate and challenge the dominant modes of expressive; personal; or lyric narratives. Beginning with a survey of international Modernism of the 20th century; the course will look at mostly Canadian texts from the 1960s to the present. Where possible; the course will integrate author readings; visiting authors; performances; field trips; and other instances of textual production or dissemination relevant to the topic of study. Prerequisite: 6 credits of 200 level English.
