ENGL 517.4

University of Calgary course This course will focus on the intersection of comics and writers in an effort to come to terms with the shifting cultural status of comics over the course of the twentieth-century. The course will focus equally on 'writers of comics'; those who treat comics as a literary form; and 'writers on comics'; or those who take comic as a topic to be addressed in fiction and criticism. Among the writers addressed by this course will be Michael Chabon; Jonathan Lethem; Neil Gaiman; Alan Moore; and Posey Simmonds. Students will be exposed to a variety of writers whose work seeks to trouble commonplace assumptions about the place of comics in contemporary culture.
