ENGL 376

This course provides instruction and practice in the foundation of writing literary fiction. Writing exercises will focus on word play; developing evocative language; the need for technically accurate and credible dialogue; identifying and mastering various narrative shifts such as exposition and Free Indirect Discourse; and understanding the necessity for tension and conflict; charaterization; and plot. Considerable time will be spent reading and studying peer work and existing examples of excellent writing. Participation in the workshop environment is essential. It does not provide instruction in writing formulaic or non- fiction. A strong academic average in writing-based courses is strongly recommended. Prerequisite: Full year of 200-level English.
